provide a 24-hour information hotline for patients in their
group. If a condition requires further tests, surgery or
hospitalization, they can arrange for a referral to a larger
hospital, saving patients time and money in searching for
specialist care.
As of the end of June 2013, there were 374 family
practitioner groups in existence, with 2,785 clinics, or 27.73%
of the country’s total, and 3,343 physicians, or 23.29% of the
total, participating in the program. The groups had more than
2
millionmembers.
In addition, there were 5,398 contracted community
pharmacies around Taiwan as of the end of June 2013 able
to fill prescriptions prescribed by a hospital or clinic. If
patients have questions about the drugs prescribed, they can
ask community pharmacists for more information on how
they are to be taken and potential side effects. Community
pharmacies not only serve as a safeguard against drug hazards,
they can also offer residents in their neighborhoods accurate
information on themedications patients have been prescribed.
