ANNUAL REPORT
C. StrengtheningMedical Checks toAvoidDuplication
From 2004, when the NHIA first introduced IC health
cards, to the present, physicians at hospitals and clinics have
accurately keyed in and uploaded services they’ve ordered
(
treatments, materials used, tests, medications, etc.) using
the proper NHIA code better than 92% of the time. Through
the process, patients’ medical records are more complete
than in the past and physicians have more detailed and
accurate information on patients who visit multiple hospitals,
preventing repetitive treatment. The “smart” health card can
store the records of a patient’s six most recent doctor visits
(
including the dates, the hospital or clinic, and the code number
for the illness being treated) and 60 most recent medical
services received (include treatments, drug prescriptions and
test results) and the names of drugs to which the patient is
allergic. It also automatically deletes older records. Doctors
access information on the card with their own special ID cards
and make use of it to guide their prescriptions or to prevent
repeating prescriptions or tests. The process enhances safety
and indirectly reduces the waste of medical resources.
